Alcorn State University hosted its annual Homecoming festivities beginning Sunday, October 8, 2017 through Saturday, October 14, 2017. This year’s theme was “EVERY DAY WE LIT (LEADING IN TRADITION).
The week kicked off on Sunday, October 8th with a Gospel Explosion at the Oakland Memorial Chapel beginning at 4:00 pm. The program consisted of performances by the gospel choir Worship Experience and a few words of encouragement by 2016-2017 Junior Class President, Terry McBeth.
On Monday, October 9th students gathered to battle each other at Game Night. The battle took place in the Campus Union Ballroom at 6:00 pm. Each class battled one another to see who would reign supreme.
Tuesday, October 10th presented the Jump Street/ Block Party which was composed of fun and entertainment as clubs and organizations including Worship Experience, Khem Klub, Girl’s Coalition, P.O.W.E.R., the Mass Communications Club, Alpha Phi Alpha, etc. gathered to promote their organizations by selling a variety of foods such as turkey legs, chips, drinks, chicken tenders, rotel, candy apples, etc.
On Wednesday, October 11th students, alumni and faculty attended the Inauguration of SGA President Patrick Herbert Jr., as well as the 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Freshman Class President, Sophomore Class President, Junior Class President, Senior Class President, Business Manager and Executive Secretary. Lamar Scott, a Senior English Literature major and 1st Vice President stated, “Through the Senate, which I preside over as 1st Vice President, we are going to fight hard to change hours to help students eat in the café later, visit the library at later times during mid-terms and finals and increase security for safety reasons.”
Thursday, October 12th brought a night of royalty with the crowning of the 91st Miss Alcorn State University Kristina Brown along with other campus queens including Miss Freshman, Miss Sophomore, Miss Junior, Miss Senior, etc. The Coronation begin at 7:00 pm in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Gymnasium with a reception immediately following.
On Friday, October 13th there was a Greek Step Show at 7:00 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium. The participants in this year’s competition included Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi. The winners were the women of the Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta and the men of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma.
Saturday, October 14th saw the Alcorn State University Braves’ football team battle the Prairie View A&M University Panthers at 2:00 pm in Spinks-Casem Stadium. The Braves did not disappoint their fan base by defeating the Panthers 34-21. Homecoming Week activities were concluded later on that night at 9:00 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium where there was a Homecoming Concert which was headlined by Hip Hop recording artist O.T. Genasis.
