The Myrlie Evers-Williams Honors Program and The Office of Global Programs presented a study aboard presentation entitled “Broadening Horizons Through Literature” via Zoom on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. The speaker was Filipe P. Machado, the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistance at Alcorn State University.
This one-hour workshop explored the significance of cultivating an international perspective through literature, broadening horizons through literature. The idea was to create a space where participants reflect on how cross-cultural readings broaden horizons, nurture critical thinking, and foster empathy. The session combines brief presentations with group discussions, guiding participants to consider how literature not only reflects specific cultural contexts but also connects us across borders. Drawing on thinkers such as Antonio Candido, Italo Calvino and Ottmar Ette, the workshop emphasized both the necessity of literature for human development and its power to open new imaginative and intellectual pathways.
The speaker, Filipe P. Machado’s goal was to encourage participants to see literature as a vital dialogue between cultures, one that helps us better understand ourselves and others in an increasingly interconnected world.
