Lady Braves Fall in SWAC Championship game, 64-44

On Saturday, March 15th, the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (14-18, 10-8) Women’s Basketball team faced off against the Southern University (SU) Jaguars (21-15,15-3) at the Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia.

The No. 6 seed Braves put up a good fight against the No. 1 Jaguars in the first quarter, but the Jaguars pulled away with a dominant second quarter as they held the Braves to just four points. The Jaguars also capitalized off of Alcorn’s turnovers as they scored 24 points off of 17
turnovers. From there on the Jaguars were in control which led them to the Conference title in the end.

Despite this loss, some Lady Braves stood out on offense as Destiny Brown led the Braves’ offense with 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Sharmayne Finely followed with 11 points and Nakia Cheathman had six points with a game high 11 rebounds.

The Lady Braves had an impressive run in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament defeating Alabama A&M University and Texas Southern University before falling to Southern, 66-44. The Lady Braves will be focused on their offseason and preparing for the 2025-2026 campaign with the loss of a big Senior group.
