Local High Schoolers Visit ‘The Reservation’

On September 23rd Alcorn State University (ASU) hosted its annual High School Day at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.

The event began at 10:00 am with registration for the students and campus touring. There were numerous high schools in attendance such as Jefferson County High School from Fayette, Mississippi, Vicksburg High School from Vicksburg, Mississippi, Forest High School from Forest, Mississippi, Terry High School from Terry, Mississippi, Newton High School from Newton, Mississippi, and O’Bannon High School from Greenville, Mississippi.

Jayden Miller, a Junior from Forrest High stated, “I can’t wait to become a Brave. There are so many opportunities here and I can’t wait to pick which one that will best fit me.” During the event, the students got a chance to receive free Alcorn T-Shirts and Swag Bags. They also were provided with meal boxes.

This year’s entertainment was provided by The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band, the Alcorn Cheer Team, Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), The Royal Braves Dance Team and the Divine 9 who provided a Greek Stroll Off. The ROTC had a push-up contest with students who wanted to show off their strength. There were also remarks made to the students by the 97th Miss Alcorn State University, Jillian Mills and the 3rd Mr. Alcorn State University, Arrington Robinson, along with the 66th Student Government Association (SGA) President, Jordan Buck.

Larry Sanders, an Assistant Professor of Mass Communications at ASU stated, “I really enjoy this event every year. I love seeing the young people’s faces when they come and see all of the vast opportunities that Alcorn has to offer them. I applaud Alcorn for hosting this event for the students.”

The purpose of this event is to inform high school students of the importance of coming to college and the opportunities that college will provide for them. But most importantly, it shows them what Alcorn can and will provide them with when they decide to take their next steps in becoming a Brave. The event concluded at 2:00 pm.
