Would you risk everything for one night and a house full of cartel money? Written and directed by Joe Carnahan, who developed the story with Michael McGrale, this film is a crime thriller inspired by the true story of Miami Dade County Police Captain Chris Casiano. It was released on Netflix in January of 2026. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck also produced the film at Artists Equity, and then Netflix later purchased the rights to distribute the film. Artists Equity also negotiated a deal with Netflix that provides the workers involved in the production a bonus if it performs well on the streaming platform.

The Rip follows a Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) in Miami after the murder of their commander, Captain Jackie Velez (Lina Esco). When Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) gets a tip about a stash house in Hialeah, he leads his squad there and discovers around $20 million hidden in the attic. Instead of calling it in, he takes everyone’s phones and insists they stay in the house to count the money, which immediately makes his team question his real intentions. As the night goes on, cartel members, internal affairs, and possibly dirty cops all close in, turning one suburban home into a war zone.

In my opinion, the best part of the film is the acting and the tension between the main characters. Dumars is calm and controlled on the surface, but you can tell he’s hiding something and constantly calculating his next move. J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck) is more emotional and hot‑headed, and their long history as partners makes their arguments hit harder because it feels like a friendship slowly falling apart. I also think the supporting cast adds a lot: Detective Mike Ro (Steven Yeun) brings nervous energy, and Detective Numa Baptiste (Teyana Taylor) and Detective Lolo Saalazar (Catalina Sandino Moreno) make the team feel like real people instead of just background cops. The movie shows how quickly loyalty can crumble when huge amounts of money and survival are on the line, which feels very realistic and honestly kind of depressing.

The Rip received 79% percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.8 out of 10 on IMDb and honestly I don’t agree. I think it’s a very entertaining movie and I recommend watching it.
