Uglies is a 1 hour and 42 minute long Sci-Fi movie that was released on September 13, 2024 on Netflix. The film features Joey King (The Kissing Booth), Keith Powers (Straight Outta Compton), and Chase Stokes (Outerbanks). Uglies is based off of novelist Scott Westerfeld’s book of the same name.
The overall plot of the movie is about a post-apocalyptic dystopian society where the Earth is controlled by technology. In human’s early stages of life, or more specifically before they turn 16, they are seen as ugly and shunned by society. After their 16th birthday, they undergo a procedure to make them pretty and accepted by society. The lead actress, Joey King (Tally Youngblood), and her peers, go through different hardships and come to terms with the procedure and ultimately uncover the truth about their so-called perfect world.
In my opinion, the plot of this movie is very foolish and seems like something a child would come up with. I discovered this movie by hearing about how bad it was, and to some extent, I can agree. The entire idea behind the movie just didn’t make sense to me and seemed as if there was really no objective or message. There was a lot of unnecessary dialogue and scenes which ultimately led nowhere.
Uglies, at times, was very dramatic for no reason other than to see the actors/actresses raise their voice to show that they had range. Although the plot was extremely pointless, Sci-Fi is one of my favorite genres, so I believe it kept me more interested in the movie than the average person. Through the entire film I just kept saying, “So, someone pitched this movie to some executive producers, and they backed it to me made? Unbelievable.” If I must say one good thing about this film is that it’s so bad, that it’s good.
