What would you do as a teacher if all but one child disappeared from your classroom at the same time on the same night? Today we’re talking about a chilling Horror movie set in a suburban town where seventeen children from a third-grade class mysteriously vanish in the middle of the night, with the community left questioning who or what is behind the disappearance. The story follows the broken lives of the remaining family members of the disappeared children, a troubled teacher, and a desperate father as the film slowly unravels the dark secrets of what really happened. It features a witch’s influence and the disturbing transformation of innocent children into mindless weapons.

Zach Cregger, the Director of the film, stated that even though Weapons is not based on a singular true story, it was inspired by Cregger’s personal experiences with grief following the death of one of his close friends. The film is said to use the emotional weight of real-life tragedy to explore the themes of grief, loss, and the fear of people suddenly disappearing. Also, the unsettling way the children run in the film, is said to be inspired by the iconic “Napalm Girl” photograph from the Vietnam War and a visual metaphor for the children being controlled.

I actually really loved this movie. The way that it was set up was so cool to see and I liked how it was a mix of a mystery and a thriller instead of your average scary movie. Throughout the entire movie it feels like you’re questioning everyone in your head on who could’ve done it and what happened, but when it’s finally revealed it makes so much sense. Overall, this movie definitely deserves a watch, especially since Halloween is coming up. Until next time, let’s see what other scary movies come out as this October unfolds.
