The Alcorn State University (ASU) J.D. Boyd Library hosted its National Library Week on April 3rd-9th. On Thursday, April 7 at 11:00 am in the Medgar Wiley Evers Auditorium, Johnny Allen, Assistant Professor of Speech and Theatre, held “The Actor’s Showcase: Resilience Your Guide To Facing Life Challenges,” which displayed various monologues and dialogues presented by students at Alcorn.
The program began with an invocation and prayer by Patrice Savoy, Media Center Assistant. Next, the showcase introduced dramatic and comedic scenes which captured the audiences’ attention from beginning to end.
Dejah Burton, a Sophomore Mass Communication major, began with a monologue titled, “Sinner’s Prayer” which told the tale of a sinner who is praying to God for mercy and forgiveness before receiving her death sentence. The showcase ended with a monologue, “I Won” by Aubre Shivers which exemplified the over-exaggerated, humorous scene of an individual who thought she won the lottery, when in reality, her name was called to perform a monologue.
“I’m so happy that we had the opportunity to complete this because of the semester we’ve had thus far, however, I just feel blessed to have this opportunity, but I feel even better now that it’s over and seeing the faces of the students and their confidence levels rise, is why we hold this event,” said Allen.
