Hair is only as good as it is treated, right? Well that’s right and wrong. There’s so many things that women think that they have figured out when it comes to natural hair care. Many women have yet to discover that natural hair care is full of trails and errors. Everyone’s hair texture is not the same which makes it hard to understand that everything won’t work for everyone.

Many women soon realize shortly after becoming natural that it is not an easy ride. Between finding a successful hair routine to defining desired styles things can get bumpy. So bumpy that you may even consider going back to the creamy crack. Things can be much easier with a few critical do’s and don’ts. Help your hair to flourish with these helpful natural hair guidelines that you never knew would make your hair happy.

1) DON’T WASH YOUR HAIR TOO MUCH

It’s important that women with natural hair do not wash their hair too much. Frequent washes can leave the hair and scalp feeling dry. Generally, in the Summer you may shampoo your hair once a week and during the Winter co-wash or a single shampoo may be done weekly.

2) GET REGULAR TRIMS

Always remember to get trimmed. Many people don’t like to trim their ends because they think that it takes away from the length of their hair. The truth is your hair looks healthier when trimming is maintained. Just like many other textures of hair, natural people should aim to get their hair trimmed every three months.

3) DON’T OVER MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR

Dry hair is something that nobody likes. However, be sure not over moisturize the hair. Some formulas that contain extremely oily bases can weigh the hair down. It can also make the hair look too greasy or cakey depending on the moisturizer used.

4) AVOID HIGH TENSION HAIR STYLES

Ladies we all love our Braids, Twists and Faux Locs but the truth is they put a strain on our hair. They are often considered protective styles, however, these styles can be taunt and tight which can damage follicles. Some of the effects of tension on the hair can be extreme shedding and Traction Alopecia. These styles shouldn’t be avoided but worn with gentle braiding in mind.

5) DON’T COMPARE YOUR HAIR TO OTHERS

One thing we all find ourselves doing is comparing our hair to the people who we see on tutorials, blogs and social media. This can be a bit deceiving because everyone’s hair does not perform the same. You must find what unique routines and products work for your hair. Learn to love your hair.

When it comes to natural hair care you should be patient with the rules. Read the ingredients in the products because it’s good to know what ingredients best accompany your hair texture. Be patient with your natural hair and have fun with it. You will eventually grow to learn what makes your hair happy.
