Rattler Strike Braves with Devastating Results

The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (0-3,1-6), fresh off of a Homecoming victory last week, ventured into yet another Homecoming this week as they visited the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers (1-1, 2-4) in Bragg Memorial Stadium looking to extend a 1 game win streak but alas the streak would come to an end.

The Rattlers got on the board first in the first quarter at the 9:29 mark when Kicker Daniel Porto kicked a 36-yard field goal making the score 3-0, FAMU. Later on at the 2:15 mark Porto nailed a 28-yard field goal making the score 6-0, FAMU.

The Braves finally found the scoreboard in the second quarter at the 11:14 mark when Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert scampered to the end zone on a 31-yard run and with Kicker Lorenzo Garcia’s extra point the score was now 6-7, Alcorn. ASU scored again at the 9:34 mark when Wide Receiver Ja’Coby Matthews returned a 79-yard punt for a touchdown and with Garcia’s Point After Touchdown (PAT) the score was now 6-14. FAMU’s Garcia nailed a 51-yard field goal at the 1:51 mark to make the score 9-14, Alcorn, right before halftime.

The only scoring done in the third quarter was at the 2:08 mark when FAMU Wide Receiver Jamar Taylor caught a 17-yard pass from Quarterback RJ Johnson III and with a successful 2-point conversion the score was now 17-14, FAMU.

The fourth quarter was full of excitement as the Rattlers got on the board at the 12:24 mark when Johnson III scored on a 26-yard run and with a successful Porto extra point attempt the score was now 12-14, FAMU. The Braves scored at the 8:56 mark making the score 24-21, FAMU, but the Rattlers retaliated at the 5:43 mark and the 3:35 mark making the score 33-21, FAMU. The Braves scored at the 2:29 mark but it was too little, too late making the final score in Tallahassee 33-28, FAMU.

The Braves finished the contest with 304 total yards of offense. Offensively for the Braves Tolbert finished with 18 completions for 178 yards and was the rushing leader with 57-yards, Matthews had 5 receptions for 49-yards while Defensively, Defensive Back Ricardo Butler lead all tackles with 9.
