On February 6-10, 2017 Alcorn State University’s Senior class celebrated its Senior Week entitled, “The Final Chapter.” The week’s events included a community service event, Black History program, a Battle of the Classes’ Basketball Game and more.
Monday, February 6th, began the week with a community service event at the Child Development Laboratory Center (CDLC) on Alcorn’s main campus. During the service, Seniors played with the children at the CDLC during their hour of recess.
Senior Biology Pre-professional major, Nehemiah Taylor, expresses, “I thought the community service event was a good way to let the campus know that the Seniors are involved which will set a good example for the other classes.”
Monday’s activities concluded with the Seniors attending to the Alcorn State versus Grambling State basketball games for the women and men’s teams in the Davey L. Whitney Gymnasium. The women’s basketball team unfortunately lost to Grambling 67 to 63 but the men’s basketball team defeated Grambling 75 to 65.
Students met up in the J.D. Boyd Library Auditorium on Tuesday, February 7th, to partake in “Alcorn’s Family Feud.” On Wednesday, February 8th, the festivities included a Black History program hosted in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom. Highlighting Black magic, the program featured performances from the Alcorn State University Gospel Choir, GQ Modeling Squad, Vybe and students Amber Love, Zion McThomas, Diamond Walley, Jackie Igbokwe, Vanesha Harris and Demond Jones. Students Gena Nicholas and Rayford Mullins gave the welcome and prayer respectively. The Senior class cabinet gave the closing remarks.
On Thursday, February 9th, the events continued with an exciting Battle of the Classes Basketball Game in the E.E. Simmons Gym on Thursday and a block party outside the Amenities Building on Friday. Senior Ryan Walker, also known as DJ Stigga Savage, provided musical entertainment throughout the week. Other classes were able to come enjoy themselves all throughout the week with the many events planned by the Senior class cabinet members.
Senior class President and Biology Pre-med major, Michael Hurns, stated, “the purpose of Senior week is to highlight the Senior class while bringing fun to the campus overall. It’s also a way for other students to know us as a class and as individuals.”
The events concluded on Friday, February 10th, with the Seniors throwing a Block party at the Amenities Building from 7:00 pm until.
