On Saturday, September 9th at 6:00 pm the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (0-2, 0-0) traveled to Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches, Texas to take on the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Lumberjacks (1-1, 0-0) in an attempt to redeem themselves from last week’s shellacking. Unfortunately, the results did not come up in the Braves’ favor as they lost 38-10.
The Lumberjacks took an early lead in the first quarter and got on the score board first at the 13:05 mark with a safety to make the score 2-0. SFA continued their scoring at the 6:38 mark when Kicker Chris Campos nailed a 37-yard field goal to make the score 5-0.
Stephen F. Austin scored first in the second quarter at the 14:31 mark when Campos nailed a 30-yard field goal to make the score 8-0. Later at the 10:01 mark a 3-yard run by Lumberjack Quarterback Brian Mauer and a successful PAT made the score 15-0. The Braves finally got on the board with Running Back Jarveon Howard’s 6-yard run and with Kicker Noah Kiani’s extra point the score was now 15-7, Lumberjacks. ASU tacked on a 33-yard field goal by Kiani before the half to make the score 15-10, Lumberjacks.
The only scoring during the third quarter happened at the 4:44 mark by the Lumberjacks when SFA got another safety to make the score 17-10, Lumberjacks.
The fourth quarter saw Stephen F. Austin hold the Braves scoreless while they added 3 scores making the final score 38-10, Lumberjacks.
The statistical leaders for the Braves were Quarterback Aaron Allen with 5 completions for 53-yards, Howard with 63-yards and 1 touchdown, Wide Receiver Malik Rodgers with 1 reception for 28-yards and Lineback Terreance Ellis had 9 tackles, 1 of them for a sack.
ASU’s home opener will be Saturday, September 17th at 6:00 pm at Spinks-Casem Stadium as they host the McNeese State University Cowboys (0-2, 0-0).
