Song Review: Old Town Road

Hip Hop has been in Lady Gaga mode lately, and by that I mean on the edge. Artists have been shying away from the norms and adding their own musical twists. As for fans, Hip Hop has become the mystery van for them, because you never know what wave you’ll ride next. And I can almost bet my entire bank account that nobody thought they’d be faithfully jamming to Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road.” The 20-year-old took the internet by storm when his song went viral from the “Yeehaw Challenge” on the video sharing app TikTok. This isn’t just any ol’ regular Hip Hop song either, it’s the first ever “Country-Trap” record to rich No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s right Country-Trap.

“Old Town Road” was so fire that Billboard decided to remove it from the Country charts due to it not being “Country” enough which I and over a thousand other music lovers out there can’t seem to understand because the melody is carried by a plucked banjo. A PLUCKED BANJO! NOW IF THAT AIN’T COUNTRY I DON’T KNOW WHAT COUNTRY IS. Any who, Lil Nas X knows how to clap back. When Billboard swung low, he swung high. High enough to get the Country Megastar a.k.a. Hannah Montana’s dad, Bill Ray Cyrus, on the remix. Cyrus tweeted, “It was so obvious to me after hearing the song just one time. I was thinking, what’s not country about it? What’s the rudimentary element of a country and western song? Then I thought, it’s honest, humble, and has an infectious hook and a banjo. What the hell more do ya need?”

Hey Billboard, how’s that? If you thought the original song was fire you gotta hear the remix. Bill Ray went stuppppppppid. This bop makes you wanna “riiiiiiiiiide till you can’t nomo!”

Overall, I rate Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” and the remix 10 out of 10 stars.
