Dear Kee:
I’m a graduating Senior in high school and I will be attending Alcorn in the Fall of 2019. I will be majoring in Nursing but herein lies the problem, I don’t want to major in this. My mother has strongly suggested that this be my major because it makes a lot of money and is stable. Kee I can’t stand the sight of blood and I hate hospitals. I am more of an artsy type individual who enjoys writing stories and reading fiction. I’d love to major in Mass Communications or English but when I tell her this she just shuts me down and tells me that there is no money to be made in either one of those majors. She makes me feel as though my talents are useless. How can I explain to her, in a kind respectful manner, that his is my passion without upsetting her because after all she is my mother and my financial lifeline until I graduate and find a job? I just want to be happy. HELP ME PLEASE!
Running Out of Options

I can completely understand where you’re coming. The last thing you want to do is disappoint your mother in any way possible. Although, at the end of the day, you can’t waste your life doing something someone else wants you to do. It’s not healthy and it’s just plain wrong. I also major in Mass Communications and I love it because I am very passionate about writing and everything else that the major has to offer. It makes me happy. My advice to you would be to tell your mother how you feel about the situation rationally yet calmly. Explain to her all of the positive aspects of the major and persuade her that this is what you want to do. She can’t be angry with you about majoring in something you are inevitably going to thrive in. Besides, you’re about to get out into the real world and you need to start making your own decisions. And who cares about the money? Yes, it’s true that certain Mass Communications majors don’t make an exorbitant amount of money, but the passion that they have for their craft is immeasurable. No amount of money can buy your passion nor your happiness. Good luck in your future endeavors.
