On Monday, October 23rd, Alcorn State University (ASU) Mass Communications students were greeted by the Director of Operations of the Gray Media Training Center, Michael A. White, Jr. This event is part of the Spring 2024 Internship Informational Session tour where White visits Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in the state of Mississippi.
The event was held in the Industrial Technology Building, in room 215 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm. White began the event with getting to know each student by name and classification. Students had the opportunity to act as a reporter or photojournalist.
Larry Sanders, an Assistant Professor at ASU, stated, “This was very informative for our students. It showed them the dynamics of the ins and outs of the Mass Communications business and the things that they must do to prepare themselves adequately for the real world.”
Students who are selected to participate in the Center’s programs will learn today’s best practices for broadcast and digital journalism. They also will receive hands-on training in production, sales, operations, IT, engineering, coding, and marketing. Training Center fellows will create weekly public affairs show that will be shot, edited, produced, directed, and hosted by students.
Layken Meaders, a Freshman Mass Communications major stated, “This event provided all of the useful knowledge and resources that we need to apply for the internship and a chance to speak one-on-one with the director was awesome.”
Students were able to hear about the upcoming Spring and Summer internship opportunities and all that they would entail. Spring 2024 applications are opening soon for the Gray Media Training Center Program at WLBT Channel 3 in Jackson, Mississippi.
