The 92nd Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday, February 9th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Many celebrities stepped out in their designer garbs for the red carpet as fashion is always a major part of any award’s show. There was only one question left remaining after the awards, who was best dressed? Let’s start dissecting some of the looks.
Beginning with Janelle Monáe, who wore a gorgeous and unique gown made of silver lacquered silk-lamé tulle covered from head to toe in faceted crystals. According to the designer Ralph Lauren via Instagram, the gown had exactly 1,060 stones. It also had a cowl hood which gave a tasteful nod to Grace Jones. Another stunning fashion moment came from Regina King. She glowed in half a million dollars worth of jewelry and a blush pink Versace gown. Lastly, arguably the best dressed of the night was Cynthia Erivo. Erivo was the definition of elegance in her white Versace gown. She also gave us a little bit of leg with a tasteful slit which seemed to be on trend this year for the red carpet.
Billy Porter has become someone to watch on the red carpet as he loves to pull out all the stops. He did not disappoint when he wore a two piece outfit designed by British style icon Giles Deacon. The gown takes a note from the interiors at Kensington Palace, home to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Porter later attended the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party and changed into a dramatic custom Christian Siriano ensemble in shades of purple, including a bubble top with feathers and a long train and lavender pants.
As mentioned before, the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party is another opportunity to show off fashion wise. Celebrities who attended the Oscars pull double duty and change outfits while others who did not attend, have the chance to show off their couture as well. Tessa Thompson was stunning in her mint green Versace gown. The leather harness detailed on the grown was a very nice touch as well. She looked like an Asgadian Queen which is befitting as she plays Valkyrie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tracee Ellis Ross and Kerry Washington also shined in golden frowns designed by Zuhair Murad.
A few couples came out to the Vanity Fair After Party and showed out together. Kim Kardashian-West was glowing with Kanye as he let her take most of the spotlight. Kardashian-West wore a stunning cream Alexander McQueen gown, while Kanye donned a leather pant suit and sleek sunglasses. Another beautiful couple was John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. Teigen wore a mint green gown with the highest leg slit of the evening, while John kept it simple in a black suit. Lastly, a couple that needs to be mentioned is Ciara and Russel Wilson. If there was a best dressed couple award, they would have won it. Ciara rocked a sheer sequined dress that made her look radiant and stunning all while showing off her baby bump. Russell looked sharp and stylish in a black satin tuxedo.
Worst dress goes to Joan Smalls. Smalls wore a Schiaparelli skirt and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. The ruffles and various shades of blue came off tacky to say the least, not to mention she simply wore pasties on her chest. It just was not up to par for a Vanity Fair event especially when compared to the other beautiful gowns that hit the carpet that night.
