The Safe Haven: The Advice Column (September 15, 2023)

Dear Zari:

I need your help ASAP! I am in a relationship with this real down to Earth young lady. She treats me well and we’re like two peas in a pod, even though we’ve only been dating for one year. I am a Sophomore here at Alcorn State University and I think that the environment is getting the best of me. It’s like every time I look around, there’s a beautiful woman approaching me wanting to get to know me better. My girlfriend is gorgeous, articulate, and an overall great person and I don’t want to lose her but the recent temptation has been strong lately. How do I stay faithful within my new relationship without straying?

Trying to Stay Faithful

Dear Trying To Stay Faithful:

First, you need to ask yourself are you capable of being in a relationship while attending college? If you’re hesitant on the answer then yes you should most likely end the relationship. It’s totally normal to find others attractive, but staying faithful is all about making a choice. You said it yourself that your girlfriend treats you well and you’re like two peas in a pod. This indicates that you genuinely like her and don’t want to hurt her emotionally.

Although you are fighting temptation, remind yourself of the qualities that you love about your girlfriend and the special bond you two share. Stay committed and communicate any concerns or doubts with her. By having trust and open communication this will help your relationship stay strong.

Lastly, remember why you chose your girlfriend and focus on building a strong connection with her. Communication and trust are two key components in a happy and healthy relationship. I hope this helps.
