Jillian Mills, a Freshman Political Science major from Greenville, Mississippi is a young lady full of vigor and a determination to succeed.
Mills has always displayed an enormous amount of leadership within her community. She has always loved giving back to her hometown by investing her time in many organizations and activities or participating in community service. Enrolling in Alcorn State University (ASU) in the Fall of 2020 was a huge milestone for her. When she heard about the chance to make ASU a better place, she refused to let an opportunity like that go to waste. “I have been in many organizations and leadership positions in my life. I was the President of the Mayor Youth Council, a member of the Young Democrats Organization, a Mississippi Democrat Party Delegate and the Vice-President for Teennette Progressive Arts and Civics Club,” Mills stated. With her exceptional background and work ethic, Mills decided to take the challenge and run for the position of Freshman Class President 2020-2021.
In an unfortunate turn of events, she lost the election. Within her defeat, she did not give up and remained optimistic about the outcome because she was determined to impact her class positively. Mills stated, “I chose to run for President, but I did not win which is perfectly fine. I wanted to run for the position because I wanted a deeper connection with my class. I wanted to fix some of the issues that I saw within the Alcorn community.” Because of her dedication and determination, Mills was appointed by the 2020-2021 Freshman Class President, JaDorra Bailey, on October 7th, to be the Freshman Class Vice President (VP) 2020-2021.
Mills looks forward to her time in office as the new Freshman VP. She’s emphasized that she wishes to fix the issues and disconnection between her Freshman class and the Alcorn campus overall. She firmly believes that ASU is a family-oriented school and she hopes to host events that will get the entire campus involved. “Leadership to me is about leveling the playing field. You need someone who is not scared to be there and a person who is fair and is not scared to stand for what is right,” Mills said.
