The Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated on the “BLUtiful” campus of Alcorn State University has dominated ‘The Yard’ with another week. The chapter held its annual Blue and White Week, titled “PURRe Domination,” on March 20, 2016 through March 25, 2016.
The week kicked off at 10 am on Sunday with a church celebration at Raining Manna Christian Center in Fayette, Mississippi.
Monday’s festivities included a yard show that was held on the Lorman campus plaza of Alcorn State and the start of a three day Instagram photo challenge. Contestants in the challenge were to take a picture with a member of Zeta Chapter each day with the appropriate hashtag for that day. They were also required to hashtag #ZCBWWPhotoChallenge and tag the Chapter’s Instagram page, @the_zetachapter. A female and male winner were determined by the most combined number of likes from the three days. Winners received a free ticket to the probate on Thursday.
The yard show featured strolls from several Greek lettered organizations such as the Iota Beta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Theta Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, the Gamma Rho (Jackson State) and Gamma Phi (Alcorn State) Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the Lambda Theta Chapter (Jackson State) of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Chelcy Leahman, a senior Mass Communications major expressed, “The ‘Kickin’ it with the Zetas’ yard show was not only entertaining for the student body, but it was also a family-friendly event. Thank you Zetas for turning us up and keeping us rated PG.”
On Tuesday, March 22, 2016, the members of Zeta Chapter hosted a “Lip Zync Contest” in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom. The event, beginning at 7:20 pm, held a captivating audience as contestants attempted to impress the crowd with their lip syncing talents. Winners, Dorian Holloway, Maurice Harris, and Kevin Robinson, were presented with free tickets to Thursday’s Zeta new member presentation.
Alcorn’s Chicken Wednesday was complimented well with “Zweet TreatZ.” The “Dovely” ladies of Zeta sold an assortment of treats on the plaza, including the famous Oreo pops made by member Krystain Coleman, senior, Biology Pre-Med.
The main event of Blue and White Week was held on Thursday. The new member presentation, titled “The D.O.V.E.S. are coming” was held at 7:20 pm in the Old Gymnasium. With a two dollar admission fee, audience members were able to see the newest members of Zeta Chapter being revealed.
Vice President of Zeta Chapter, Shanteria Crockett, presented the new members. New members included Catyria Smith, senior, Kerrie Huff, senior, Artrista Saffold, junior, Shamesha Martin, sophomore, Tamadj Wilson, senior, Derryin Stampley, sophomore, Andreshae’ Spiller, senior, Jilisa Benton, senior, Tori Spann, junior, Breanna Griffin, senior, Jameka Beverly, senior, Bobbie Williams, senior, and Torria Powell, sophomore.
The winners of the photo challenge were also announced on Thursday. They were senior students Trey Brown and Alexandria Colbert. Each received a free ticket to the new member presentation.
The week concluded on Friday with a community service project of highway cleanup at 10 am and the annual Blu White Picnic held at the Campus Park from noon to 4 pm. Alcorn State students were able to enjoy themselves with free food, music, and a water balloon fight.
