The Alcorn State University (ASU) Lady Braves were tired of missed opportunities and failed scenarios and on Saturday, January 19th as they prepared to face off against the Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) Lady Devilettes at 3:00 pm at the Davey L. Whitney Complex, they looked to right those wrongs. With no hesitation, they left it all on the floor as they defeated the Lady Devilettes in a 10 point spread.
In the first half the Lady Braves grabbed an early lead scoring 18 points in the first half compared to Mississippi Valley’s 15 points. MVSU, refusing to be denied, came back harder the second quarter ending the first half with momentum as they outscored the Lady Braves by putting up 23 points compared to Alcorn’s 19 points. Coming back after the half, ASU knew something had to give. Scoring 21 points to Mississippi Valley’s 15 points the Lady Braves entered the 4th quarter leading 58-53. The 4th quarter was a tough scoring quarter for the Lady Devilettes as they only scored 10 points in the full 10 minutes, making it easy for the Lady Braves to outscore them by 5 points in that quarter which resulted in victory as Alcorn State defeated the Lady Devilettes 73-63.
The Lady Braves’ offense was led by Senior, De’Asia Brown, as she totaled 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Following her were Sophomores Jamaysha Bernard and Kirdis Clark as they both aided Alcorn with 15 points. Clark also added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Bernard ended the night with a double-double with her 17 rebounds being the icing on the cake. MVSU’s leading scorer was Desiray Mosley with 14 points followed by LaKendra Bassett with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
The Alcorn State Lady Braves’ next contest will be against the Arkansas Pine-Bluff University (APBU) Lady Lions on Monday, January 21st at 5:30 pm at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
