The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., hosted Slay Week 2016 from Monday, April 18, 2016 through Saturday, April 23, 2016 on the campus of Alcorn State University.
Greek weeks are normally held throughout the semester on ‘The Yard’. It is a chance for the organizations to host events and give back to the campus. The Ladies of AKA named their week ‘Pretty in Pearls: Slay Week’. They held a week full of activities for the students of ASU to enjoy.
The week began on Monday, April 18th with “We Slay Unity: Day Party.” It was a party on the Campus Plaza from 6:08 pm to 9:00 pm. DJ Swazy provided the music for the Slay Week. Guests were asked to bring seasonal wraps as donations into the Day Party.
On Tuesday, April 19th the Ladies hosted “We Slay Sisterhood: Pretty in my PJs” in the Multipurpose Room of the Student Union. It was a slumber party that consisted of fun yet stimulating girl talk. Guests were asked to bring toiletries for entrance into this event.
On Wednesday, April 20th the events went up to a different level. The Ladies hosted “Slay like a K: Strut like an AKA” in the E. E. Simmons Gymnasium. This was a great turn out. This event consisted of men around campus dancing, stepping, and strolling like AKAs. There were four groups of men that participated in the strut. Members of the AKAs directed each group.
On Thursday, April 21st was “Formation: Mr. Ivy Leaf Pageant” in the Ballroom of the Campus Union. Johnny Jenkins was named Mr. Ivy Leaf 2016 and Cori Pittman was named Mr. Gamma Phi 2016. Pittman stated, “When I entered the Pageant, I had no idea I would actually be leaving with one of the titles.”
On Friday, April 22nd the Ladies hosted “We Slay in the Sun: Fun in the Sun” at the Amenities Building from 3:08 pm to 6:00 pm. There was food, music, volleyball and basketball games. The event gave students a chance to enjoy the sun after a week of rain.
The week concluded on Saturday, April 23rd with “We Slay Service: Campus cleanup.” The Ladies, along with some other students, cleaned the campus of Alcorn State University. The main area of focus was the Medgar Wiley Evers Heritage Village because it is the most utilized area of the campus.
The students of Alcorn were very appreciative to the Gamma Phi Ladies for hosting such fun events before Final examinations took place.
