Avantavist T. Carter: From Hazlehurst to Alcorn’s 68th SGA President

When Avantavist T. Carter walked across the stage to be inaugurated as Alcorn State University’s (ASU) 68th Student Government Association (SGA) President, it was more than just a proud moment. For Carter, a first-generation college student from Hazlehurst, Mississippi, it was the reflection of a promise he made to himself years ago, to lead, to serve, and to make a difference.

Carter has been no stranger to leadership. Back in high school, he was elected SGA President, already showing a gift for connecting with people and creating change. When he arrived at Alcorn, those same qualities shined through. As a Freshman, he was chosen as Second Mister Freshman, a role that helped him step into the spotlight and represent his peers.

But Carter’s story isn’t one of shortcuts or privilege, it’s one of hard work. He balanced being a Residential Assistant with internships and long hours working in Student Engagement. He was always the type to lend a helping hand, plan an event, or make sure others felt included. His service was never about recognition, it was about impact.

Within the SGA, Carter served as Business Manager, learning the ins and outs of responsibility and accountability. That role, though behind the scenes, helped prepare him for the leadership he now holds.

For Carter, being inaugurated as SGA President is deeply personal. As a first-generation student, he’s carried not only his own dreams but also the hopes of his family and community. “I’ve always wanted to show people back home and here at Alcorn that your background doesn’t limit your future,” Carter stated.

From Hazlehurst to the highest seat in student leadership, Carter has always been guided by a simple belief: leadership means service. And as he steps into this new role, he carries with him the same determination, humility, and heart that have shaped his journey all along.
