On Wednesday, September 5, 2017 at 6:00 pm at the Ecology Building on the campus of Alcorn State University, Girl’s Coalition hosted a recruitment dinner for prospective students.

Girl’s Coalition is an organization that inspires and uplifts collegiate women through mentorship and organized fellowship and brings awareness to the needs for an alliance among young ladies as they maneuver through the hardships of college. The organization was created in 2016 and went through a re-branding phase and relaunched in the Fall of 2017. Girl’s Coalition was chartered on the Alcorn campus in the Fall of 2017.

The event had well over 100 ladies in attendance with a program that consisted of an elegant dinner which included pasta, barbecue pulled pork and a salad. The Welcome and Prayer were presented by Jada Spann, a Senior Biology major. During the Mix and Mingle portion of the program, the young ladies were able to meet each other while listening to the tunes of DJ SUPERSTARSWAZY. During the Special Presentations, Madeline Hardy, a Senior Criminal Justice major presented a poem entitled “Genes” that emphasized the importance of how brown girls should flourish in the world.

The program proceeded with the Girl’s Coalition’s history and background by the founder at Jackson State University’s Campus, Alexis Moore. Moore explained how she was elated that Girl’s Coalition was branching out to other campuses. The program concluded with information provided by Patrice Briscoe, President of Alcorn’s Girl’s Coalition and Jakhia Gray, Vice-President of Alcorn’s Girl’s Coalition on the application process and procedure. Briscoe stated, “I think it was necessary to charter Girl’s Coalition onto Alcorn State University’s campus because I think there was a need to reach out more to the high school girls coming into Alcorn and to use the organization as more of an empowerment and mentor-ship tool for the young ladies that are already here.” Gray stated, “Girl’s Coalition, Alcorn chapter, has planned to take Alcorn by storm by helping to empower and uplift the women on campus by doing community service on campus and off campus in Port Gibson, Mississippi and Fayette, Mississippi.”

Attendants that received their application packets on Wednesday, September 6 were told to return them by Tuesday , September 12, 2017. For more information about joining Girl’s Coalition, visit the website at www.mooreformation.wixsites.com.
