Alcorn State University’s (ASU) J.D. Boyd Library celebrated its Archives Week 2019 on October 1-4. The premiere event occurred on October 2nd at 2:00 pm in the J.D. Boyd Medgar Wiley Evers Auditorium where the “Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future” program was held.
The program began with the greeting which was performed by Miss J.D. Boyd Library 2019-2020, Alexcia Brooks followed by the Invocation which was delivered by Mr. J.D. Boyd Library 2019-2020, Kyoshi Agnew. Next, ASU’s Gospel choir performed their very own musical selection, then Dr. Voletta Williams, Professor and Biology Department Chairperson, introduced the guest speaker, Jessica Hinton-Hawkins, former Miss Alcorn State University 2009-2010.
Hinton-Hawkins, who received a warm reception from the audience, received both her Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees in Biology from ASU. She is married to Kejuan Hawkins and together they own Promount, LLC, a production company that specializes in graphics, media and music production. She serves as the Praise and Worship Leadership and Media Department leader at Word of Faith Ambassadors Worship Center in Natchez, Mississippi. She has been very active in her community by giving back with the Big Brother/ Big Sister of Mississippi program and several Breast Cancer Awareness Programs. She has made it her mission to outreach to the youth and make her community a better place. “There is no dream like yours, there is no destiny like your destiny, and there is no future like yours. You have the power to create your future. You have the power to create your destiny,” stated Hinton-Hawkins speaking to the audience.
The ”Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future” program gave insight into what the J.D. Boyd Library had in store for the rest of the week. Bringing those from the past such as featured speaker Hinton-Hawkins to speak in front of students showed them how through determination and hard work that their dreams will come true. Eyvette Griffin, a Junior Business major from Houston, Texas stated, “I felt that the program was exceptional and it was really great to hear from a former Miss Alcorn on the great things that you can accomplish in life when you prioritize accordingly. This entire event was extremely insightful.”
