The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (3-4, 2-2) looked to redeem themselves this week during their Homecoming game against the Texas Southern University (TSU) Tigers (3-4, 3-2) at Spinks-Casem Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi on Saturday, October 22nd but this would not be the case.
TSU jumped on the scoreboard first in the first quarter at the 7:22 mark when Wide receiver AJ Bennett grabbed an 18-yard pass from Quarterback Andrew Body and with Kicker Curtis Falkenburg’s extra point the score was 7-0, Tigers. The Braves responded at the 3:03 mark with a score of their own when Wide receiver Monterio Hunt caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Aaron Allen but unfortunately, Kicker Noah Kiani’s extra point was no good making the score 7-6, Tigers.
The Braves scored first in the second quarter at the 12:17 mark when Wide receiver Juan Anthony Jr. pulled in a 62-yard pass from Allen and with a successful Kiani extra point the score was 7-13, Braves. The Tigers scored right before halftime with 38 seconds remaining when Safety Raheme Fuller ran a 45-yard interception in for the score and with a successful Falkenburg kick the score was 14-13, Tigers.
Alcorn opened up the third quarter with a score at the 12:39 mark when Running back Jarveon Howard scored on a 34-yard run and with Kiani’s PAT (point after touchdown) the score was 14-20, Braves. The Tigers put on an offensive clinic as they scored with a field goal at the 8:58 mark and a touchdown at the 7:19 mark making the score 24-20, Tigers.
TSU continued their offensive onslaught on the Braves into the fourth quarter as they scored twice more with a touchdown at the 12:38 mark and a field goal at the 2:22 mark making the score 34-20, Tigers. Alcorn tacked on a score with 16 seconds remaining in the contest when Howard scored on a 16-yard pass from Allen and a successful Kiani extra point but it was too little too late as the Braves fell to the Tigers 34-27.
The offensive leaders of the game were Allen who had 27 completions for 396 yards with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, Howard had 23 carries for 135 yards and 1 touchdown while Anthony Jr. had 8 receptions for 121-yards and 1 touchdown. Defensively, Cornerback Keyron Kinsler Jr. had 1 interception.
The Braves attempt to regroup and look for that elusive win that has evaded them for the past 2 weeks when they take on the Grambling State University (GSU) Tigers (1-6, 0-4) at 2:00 pm at Eddie Robinson Stadium in Grambling, Louisiana. You can listen to the game on WPRL 91.7 FM.
