On Tuesday, February 6th, at 7:00 pm, Alcorn State University (ASU) Alumna, Miata “MiMi” Hudson held “Mimi Magic Presents: Pre-Valentine’s Heels Class” in the dance room at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. This is not the first class she has taught at ASU nor is she a stranger to the campus. The ladies of Alcorn were invited to bring their heels and come slay the event. Everyone was welcome and there was no experience required. Hudson provided a safe environment for women to come let loose, have fun and dance.
Hudson choreographed a sensuous routine to one of R&B singer Tank’s songs to give the ladies a hint as to what they were in store for. After prepping the students with stretching and a light warm up, she began the class. She taught the dance steps slowly by taking it step by step so the students could really focus and learn. A large amount of the young ladies showed up as the dance room was filled to capacity so Hudson cut the group in half and taught each group the dance so everyone had a chance to learn. Everyone involved was invested in getting the dance routine down perfectly.
Hudson stated, “The reason why I began teaching dance classes is because when I graduated from Alcorn I was unhappy because I had nowhere to share my dancing skills but by the grace of God I got an internship under Jacqueline Ford. She works at Alcorn as a Health and Wellness Coordinator. She allowed me to teach dance classes under a health and wellness program called “Ladies of the County” in Fayette, Mississippi. After that began, I was charging $2 per class and out of nowhere, a lady named Tomesha Thomas, the owner of Epic Dance and Fitness offered me a job without me even applying, so that is how it started.”
Nahbria Freeman, a Freshman Biomedical Engineering major stated, “I actually enjoyed the class. It was a lot of fun and was great exercise. I would definitely take the class again.” Hudson’s next class is set to be at Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana on February 15th.
