The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi Iota (SCI) Academic Honor Society held their annual SCI Week February 19th through the 23rd. The purpose of SCI Week is to provide the student body with the benefits of being a member of the honor society.

During the week, events such as a Youth and Motivation Task Force, Mock Interviews, a Career Fair, SCI New Membership Induction ceremony and a retreat all stood to emphasize professionalism in relation to career exploration.

Mock interviews, facilitated by Co-advisor and founding member Carey Butler, served to provide students with real world interview experience with resume and interview critiques. This service strengthens the confidence in students as they appear in many other interviews.

The All School Career Fair was held in the James L. Bolden Campus Union on Wednesday, February 21st from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This event hosted 42 employers who showed up ready to hire and to pass out information about career internship opportunities. Some of the employers present included Tupelo Public Schools, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Ingalls Shipbuilding.  Rhanna Wilson, a Sophomore Biology major from Chicago, Illinois stated, “I was surprised to see the number of employers present and I received a lot of information that I will use as I think about my options after college.”

On Thursday, February 22nd, the honor society hosted their induction ceremony. The ceremony honored 92 new inductees and seven existing executive board members. Advisor and Founder, Dr. Joey Mitchell noted that, “This is the highest number of inductees we have received in our history. SCI is here for the students because we invest in their career development.”

SCI is a very prominent organization on campus and thus has made efforts to broaden its reach. Their next event will be a Second Chance Job Fair scheduled for April 19th 2018 in the Natchez Mall that will benefit community members who have had run-ins with the law and are seeking employment.
