On Thursday, October 15, 2015 Alcorn State University held the Coronation for Amber Janay King, Miss Alcorn State University 2015-2016, at 7:00 pm at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
King, 21, is a native of Greenville, MS and a senior Social Work major. She is the daughter of Patrick Nix and Latasa King. Not only does King fulfill her duties as Miss Alcorn but she is also a member of several other organizations on campus such as Pi Gamma Mu, the Social Work Club and Phi Alpha International Honors Society. King’s plan after graduation is to continue her education by attending graduate school and receiving a Masters degree in Social Work and then becoming a Clinical Social Worker in the U.S. Air Force.
During the Coronation the mood was infectious. Everyone was anticipating King’s crowning. The Mistress of Ceremony was Airnecia Mills, Miss Alcorn State University 2013-2014, who introduced her Majesty’s Royal Court which consisted of Miss Freshman, Valerie Dean, 18, a Pre-Nursing major from Greenville, MS, Miss Sophomore, Kristina Brown, 19, a Psychology major from Jackson, MS, Miss Junior, 20, a Criminal Justice major from Edwards, MS, and Miss Senior, 21, a Psychology major from Columbia, MS.
After the introduction of Her Majesty’s Royal Court, the moment everyone was anticipating finally arrived. Her Royal Majesty Miss King entered the dimly lit room with elegance and grace while being escorted by Adrian McLain, SGA President 2015-2016. She was then crowned and presented with a bouquet of roses by Dr. Alfred Rankins, Jr., President of Alcorn State University. During her acceptance speech King stated, “I would like to first give honor and thanks to God for making my dream become a reality. I would like to thank my mom, my immediate family, and the student body for believing and trusting in me.”
