The Lead Listening Society of Lambda Sigma Nu hosted their Spring 2021 Induction Ceremony on Thursday, March 4th at 12:30 pm in the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Hall Gold Room.

Founded in October of 2020 by Dr. John Igwebuike, Professor of Legal Environment of Business at Alcorn State University (ASU), The Lead Listening Society–Lambda Sigma Nu is a unique society dedicated to enhancing the listening leadership skills of its members for lifelong learning and leadership success. Listening is a universal force for good in the world and society members can harness its positive power by learning, practicing, and disseminating the art skill and the science of effective listening. In applying these principles members grow to become artful listeners while helping to make the world a better place.

Lambda Sigma Nu has ten commitments which equate to the word LISTEN. These include creating safe spaces, withholding all pre-judgments, seeking to understand then to be understood, being swift to listen and slow to speak, listening to understand not just reply, responding from another’s perspective, acknowledging before asserting, receiving and giving constructive feedback, thanking the speakers and listeners, and committing to a lifelong practice of self-reflection.

Fall inductee member and host of the event, Xavian Lewis, a Junior Business Administration major and President of Lambda Sigma Nu, sees the society growing. “When I joined this society and met Dr. Igwebuike, and with him being my professor as well, I found a passion within myself to say, ‘Listening means more than what we think it does.’ So with this being our second time hosting this event and facilitating everything, it made it mean even more. I’ve learned what it means to do this, and I’ve put in the work and now I can see the fruition of it,” said Lewis.

LaMar Scott, Admissions Recruiter for the Office of Admissions at Alcorn, was the keynote speaker of the program. He expressed the significance of listening by stating to the audience, “You must know when to speak and when not to speak. Listen to understand and not just reply.” Following his message, the society inducted 18 new members which consisted of Decavis Thrasher, Constance Lenoir, Dymyne Lollis, Hailey Shelton, Ambria Handy, Jillian Mills, Elisha Jones, Shekinah Douglas, Nijah Echols, Jeffery Adams, Rayna Brown, Walter Williams Jr., Chaz Coleman, Molia’i Harris, Narkeshia Green, Delicia Lewis, Tiara Goldsberry and Keyshawn Norris.

Inductee Nijah Echols, a Senior Business Administration major, stated that the society supports her beliefs. “I stand firm in the Bible so I definitely pay attention to those verses that speak on listening such as Proverbs 17:28, and the Lead Listening Society stresses that listening is the most important skill.”
