Lady Braves Lose Season Opener


With anticipation running amok for some round ball action, the 2018-2019 basketball season on ‘The Yard’ began on Tuesday, November 6th with the Alcorn State Lady Braves taking on the Lane College Lady Dragons at the Davey L. Whitney Complex at 5:30 pm in Lorman, Mississippi. The Lady Braves enter this season with four returning starters who were all looking to continue where they left off from last season, but with some improvements. 

The Lady Braves struggled to find their groove at the beginning of the game. With the score being 10-0, with 8 minutes left in the first quarter, Alcorn found a spark with a needed bucket from returning Junior, Jada Hargrove, which turned things around. After shaking the nervousness off, the Lady Braves ended the first quarter with the score being  16-7. Outscoring the Lady Dragons in the second quarter by 6 points, Alcorn went into halftime with the score being 49-46. Fighting to stay alive, Alcorn didn’t let up in the third quarter as they and the Lady Dragons both scored 19 points in that period. Slipping right through their hands, they lost the fight in the fourth quarter as Lane College outscored the Lady Braves by 9 points. Although it was a valiant effort by the Lady Braves they lost the contest 70-58.

The leading scorer for Alcorn was Junior, Toddrianna Isler with a double-double. Isler led the team in scoring, rebounds, and steals. She totaled 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. Following Isler, was Jada Hargrove, who let her presence be known with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Junior, Charisma Walker, aided as well, with an explosive 10 points and 8 rebounds. The leading scorers for Lane College was Porchia Hannah and Alexis Harris who both had 12 points. Hannah also lead the Lady Dragons with a double-double as she also had 13 rebounds.
