Beneath the shade of giant trees lies an individual with an incredible academic acumen and a passion for knowledge. That young woman is KeAmber Council, a 20-year-old junior majoring in Broadcast Journalism from Waldorf, Maryland.

Being a military brat Council moved around quite often in her young life. With her mother, Major Nickita Council being a nurse in the Air Force, and her father, Leroy Council Jr. being a photographer at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. she had numerous experiences to reflect upon. Council has lived in several states and foreign countries which include Alaska, Virginia, England, Maryland and Georgia but due to her family moving every three to four years it was hard for her make and maintain friendships.

She graduated from North Point High School in Waldorf, Maryland in 2013 with a 3.6 grade point average. While in high school she enjoyed being a member of the North Point Poms Dance Team. “I really enjoy dancing. It’s something that relaxes me,” said Council.

After high school she contemplated what her next move would be. Her mother, who had attended Alcorn, suggested that she apply to the University, upon which she did, and got accepted. Once at Alcorn, Council received a full academic scholarship to attend.  She stated, “My parents instilled in me hard work pays off and in this situation it certainly did.” Upon arriving at Alcorn, Council chose the major of Broadcast Journalism because she enjoys writing and informing people about the who, what, where, when, and why of certain situations and how it effects the public at large. Once at Alcorn Council did not dally academically. She has been on the Dean’s List and President’s List every semester that she’s been at the Institution.

Not only is Council an academic scholar with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average but she has also participated in several extracurricular activities such as being a member of the dance group, the Bravettes, a staff writer for Alcorn’s online newspaper, The Campus Chronicle, the GQ Modeling Squad, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Council says, “I chose Zeta Phi Beta because it embodies the principles of which it was founded upon. To me it represents finer womanhood.”

After graduation Council plans on pursuing a Masters degree in Journalism at either Boston University, Arizona State University or Arkansas State University. She says that after receiving her Masters degree she plans to attend law school. She is currently uncertain about the type of law that she’d like to study but one thing is certain is that she wants to move back to the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area.

Council says that one particular Bible verse that she lives by is Proverbs 22:6 which states, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is older he will not depart from it.” She says that her parents raised her correctly and in the right manner because they knew that when she went off to college that they could trust her and that’s something that really resonated with her. Council is indeed one of Alcorn’s shining stars.
