On Tuesday, February 9, 2016 Alcorn State University held its annual Spring Career Fair from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the James L. Bolden Campus Union on the Lorman Campus.
Alcorn State’s Career Fair gives students a chance to meet with different employers from around the country about available job opportunities. The Fair helps students build character, develop connections and improve their professional skills. Some companies which were represented at the Career Fair were Cargill, Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), Regions Financial Cooperation, Waffle House, Republic Finance and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Candace Walker, a Senior Business major from Chicago, IL stated, “I had a wonderful time today and I’ve spoken with many representatives from numerous companies and it’s highly possible that I may have an internship scheduled for this summer.” Walker stated how she’d attended every Career Fair that Alcorn had hosted since she was a Freshman and each time she’s made contacts throughout the country that could one day be a potential employer for her.
Darren Massey, a representative for Republic Finance, explained how his company was at the Career Fair specifically looking for young college graduates to fill certain entry level positions. “I am so glad to have this opportunity to come and speak to the students at Alcorn about the job offerings that we have available,” stated Massey. Republic Finance seeks to recruit qualified individuals to learn the importance of credit and the ins and outs of the financial aspects of the business world.
The annual Career Fair was indeed a success due to the well over one hundred students who attended the event. Myron Hunter, a Freshman Criminal Justice major from Bastrop, LA said, “Today’s experience for me was very educational. I learned a lot of things about how life works outside of college and that was indeed eye opening.”
