ASU Hosts Autumn Fest 2020

Alcorn State University (ASU) hosted its annual Homecoming festivities entitled “Autumn Fest” which took place October 26th through October 31st.

On Monday, October 26th, the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society and the Student Government Association (SGA) gave Homecoming a great start with the “Autumn Xtravaganza” on the Campus Green. Many students came out to participate in fun games, a pumpkin carving contest, a costume contest, a photo booth and more. Also, students got the opportunity to enjoy a live DJ and food. Niketa Brown, a Graduating Senior stated, “I am very excited to know that we are still having a safe Homecoming even while the pandemic is going on. Homecoming is a big part of Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ (HBCUs) culture and I didn’t want to miss this opportunity before graduation.”

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) took the Homecoming spirit to another level on Tuesday, October 27th with the “Gym of Terror”, where nightmares came true and darkness took over. Students waited in line outside of the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium ready to be spooked by the haunted house. There was also food and drinks sold to the participants.

ASU’s Girl’s Coalition, Mortar Board Senior Honor Society and NSLS collaborated to host a Breast Cancer Awareness walk on Wednesday, October 28th at 2:30 pm in support of survivors and those that have lost loved ones due to Breast Cancer. The walk began at Lanier Hall then preceded to the Oakland Chapel and then concluded at the Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility. The walk was followed by a balloon release that took place on the Campus Green.

Unfortunately on Thursday, October 29th the Coronation of the 94th Miss Alcorn State University 2020, Taea Jackson, was postponed to a later date due to Hurricane Zeta and COVID-19 concerns.

On Friday, October 30th there was a Video Safe Party on the visitor’s side of Spinks-Casem Stadium starting at 7:00 pm. Also during this time Braves Dining encouraged students to participate in the Braves Spooky Challenge. Students had to take a photo of themselves on Friday in the exit area of the dining hall by the Halloween backdrop and tag @bravesdiningasu on Twitter using the hashtag #BravesSpookyChallenge. The person with the most likes by 7:00 pm received a S’mores basket paper writing at the Video Safe Party. Emmanuel Ufio, Executive Secretary for the SGA, stated, “I am feeling great about Homecoming and I am really looking forward to Saturday. It’s is going to be nice to watch movies that I have never seen with my Alcorn family.”

Homecoming concluded on Saturday, October 31st as students returned to Spinks-Casem Stadium for Thriller Movie Night.
