Alcorn State University (ASU) recently held its annual Brave Fest Week on Monday, April 15th through Thursday, April 18th. The week was organized by the University’s Student Government Association (SGA).
The week began on Monday with an innovative event called Aux Cord Wars hosted by actor and entertainer, Jay Dukes. The idea of the game is two students get picked out of the crowd and both have their own aux cord. The crowd picks a musical genre and the two students play songs back and forth battling to see who can play the better selections. The winner got bragging rights and T-shirts with the Aux Cord War logo inscribed on it.
On Tuesday, students dawned their finest clothes and attended the Brave Choice Awards. The week prior, students and faculty were able to nominate and vote for various categories such as Academic Department of the Year, Male Faculty of the Year, Female Faculty of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Best School Spirit of the Year, etc. Organizations, students, and staff were able to take home plaques for their hard work on Alcorn’s campus and some students even took home multiple awards. The 93rd Miss Alcorn State University, Jakhia Gray, won the awards for Best Dressed Student of the Year and Student Leader of the Year. Gray even warned the audience during her acceptance speech for Best Dressed by stating, “My Court and I are going to look so good in the Fall, you all (the student body) should be prepared to have your wigs snatched.”
On Wednesday, the student body was treated to a comedy show hosted by the comedian, Pretty Vee, who is a regular on the hit TV show, Wild ‘n Out. Pretty Vee warmed the student body up for B. Simone who was a crowd pleaser. She earned a lot of laughs and interacted with several of the students, even staying to take a few pictures after her performance.
Brave Fest came to a close on Thursday because of the Good Friday holiday the next day. The SGA planned to finish the week off with a bang. 20-year-old, Memphis rapper Key Glock was set to perform at 6:00 pm in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium (Old Gym) but unfortunately due to severe weather complications, the concert was delayed. The students rallied together and still waited in anticipation for the rapper. Key Glock eventually was able to come and perform a few songs for the crowd and took pictures and videos with them afterwards.
